New Addition to the Flora of Bhutan: Impatiens Species Discovery

The National Biodiversity Centre (NBC), in collaboration with the Jomotsangkha Wildlife Sanctuary, is pleased to announce the discovery of two Impatiens species newly recorded for Bhutan’s flora: Impatiens gamblei Hook.f. and Impatiens laevigata Wall. ex Hook.f. & Thomson.

In addition to these records, the study provides the first confirmed specimen-based record of Impatiens falcifera Hook.f. from Bhutan. Previously included in the flora based on occurrence in neighboring regions, I. falcifera is now formally validated as part of Bhutan’s native plant diversity.

These findings are part of an extensive field survey conducted between 2022 and 2024 across unexplored and botanically underrepresented districts in Bhutan. The specimens are deposited at the National Herbarium (THIM), and detailed morphological assessments were conducted using regional floras and herbarium references.
