8 June 2026: An advocacy and educational program on Bhutan’s biodiversity legislation and the Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) regime was successfully conducted at Wangbama Central School by the National Biodiversity Centre (NBC). The program aimed to enhance students’ understanding of the country’s biodiversity conservation efforts, legal frameworks, and the sustainable use of biological resources.
The session brought together students and teachers of Wangbama Central School, providing them with insights into Bhutan’s Biodiversity Act, Biodiversity Rules and Regulations, and the national ABS framework. Participants were introduced to the mandates and functions of the National Biodiversity Centre and its role in conserving the nation’s rich biological diversity.
During the program, students learned how Bhutan balances biodiversity conservation with sustainable utilization of biological resources to support livelihoods, scientific research, and national development. The discussions highlighted Bhutan’s commitment to safeguarding its unique ecosystems and genetic resources while ensuring that benefits arising from their use are shared fairly and equitably in accordance with the ABS regime.
The National Biodiversity Centre emphasized the importance of creating awareness among students, who will play a crucial role in shaping the future of biodiversity conservation in Bhutan. Through such educational initiatives, NBC aims to foster greater appreciation and understanding of the country’s biodiversity and the legal frameworks that support its protection and sustainable use.
The National Biodiversity Centre extends its sincere appreciation to the management, teachers, and students of Wangbama Central School for providing the opportunity to conduct the program and for their active participation and engagement throughout the session. NBC looks forward to continued collaboration with educational institutions across the country to promote biodiversity awareness and strengthen conservation efforts for future generations.
