16 September 2025: The National Biodiversity Centre (NBC) welcomed students from the Environmental Science program of Royal Thimphu College (RTC) today as part of their academic module Fundamentals of Biodiversity. The visit provided the students with firsthand exposure to NBC’s diverse programs, mandates, and its vital contributions to biodiversity conservation in Bhutan.
During the program, the students were introduced to NBC’s role in conserving and sustainably managing the country’s rich biological resources. Presentations highlighted NBC’s initiatives in biodiversity documentation, sustainable utilization of genetic resources, and conservation policies that support both scientific research and community livelihoods.
As part of the visit, the students toured NBC’s specialized laboratories and facilities, including the Bioprospecting Laboratory, the Plant and Animal Gene Bank, the National Herbarium, and the Invertebrate Laboratory. These visits offered the students practical insights into the technical and scientific work carried out by NBC to conserve, study, and utilize Bhutan’s unique biodiversity.
The interactive sessions and exposure visits not only enriched the students’ academic learning but also inspired them to appreciate the importance of biodiversity conservation in addressing global environmental challenges.
Such collaborative engagements between academic institutions and national agencies like NBC serve as an important platform to nurture future environmental stewards and strengthen conservation efforts in the country.
