The National Biodiversity Centre (NBC), under the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, has commenced a Consultation Workshop cum Writeshop on Biodiversity Statistics of Bhutan from 30 March to 4 April 2026 at Khamsum Hotel, Phuentsholing.
The workshop brings together taxonomic experts and representatives from relevant agencies and organizations to review, update, and validate Bhutan’s national biodiversity statistics and species checklists. The initiative aims to strengthen the country’s biodiversity knowledge base by incorporating new species records (from 2018 onwards), while also revisiting and refining existing datasets from the preliminary baseline of the Biodiversity Statistics of Bhutan 2017.
During the opening day, participants were introduced to the objectives, methodology, and data standards for the exercise, including alignment with global taxonomic references such as the Catalogue of Life. Technical sessions also highlighted key observations from the review of the 2017 baseline data, including the need to address data gaps, typographical errors, and duplication.
The writeshop, which is currently ongoing, provides a collaborative platform for experts to contribute their knowledge and ensure the accuracy, consistency, and completeness of Bhutan’s biodiversity records.
