The Animal Genetic Resources (AnGR) team from the National Biodiversity Centre (NBC) recently visited Mr. Mon Bahadhur Sunwar, a passionate farmer from Thakhorling village, under Patshaling Gewog, Tsirang. Mr. Mon Bahadhur Sunwar has demonstrated exceptional commitment to the conservation of Bhutan’s indigenous poultry breeds through a well-managed free-grazing system that integrates traditional knowledge with innovative practices.
Currently, he maintains a flock of over 500 native chickens, representing about five distinct strains, including the Native Black, Frizzle, and Naked Neck varieties. His efforts reflect a deep understanding of the value and uniqueness of native genetic resources.
With a clear vision for the future, Mr. Mon Bahadhur Sunwar plans to expand his flock further with systematic segregation and management of each strain. This initiative not only supports genetic conservation but also contributes to the resilience and sustainability of Bhutan’s rural poultry sector.
