The National Biodiversity Centre (NBC), under the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, successfully concluded a two-day Awareness and Capacity-Building Programme on the Bhutan Biodiversity Portal (BBP) and biodiversity legislation on 18 March 2026 at the NBC headquarters in Serbithang.
The programme brought together members from the tourism sector with the aim of strengthening awareness on biodiversity conservation, relevant legislation, and citizen-based biodiversity documentation.
On the second day, participants attended sessions on biodiversity statistics, basic plant taxonomy, invasive alien species, and mushroom diversity, delivered by experts from the National Biodiversity Centre and the National Mushroom Centre. Participants were also introduced to the Bhutan Biodiversity Portal, Bhutan’s citizen science platform that enables the public to document and share biodiversity observations.
The programme also featured presentations from the Nature Conservation Division under the Department of Forests and Park Services on CITES, and from the Bhutan Food and Drug Authority on biosecurity measures and phytosanitary certification.
A key highlight of the day was the hands-on BioBlitz activity, where participants explored the NBC campus and documented species observations using the Bhutan Biodiversity Portal. This practical exercise provided participants with firsthand experience in contributing to citizen-based biodiversity documentation in Bhutan.
The programme concluded with a quiz session, and the award of certificates and prizes.
