17 March 2026, Serbithang: The National Biodiversity Centre successfully conducted the first day of the awareness program on biodiversity conservation, legislations, and citizen science through the Bhutan Biodiversity Portal (BBP) for the tourism sector on 17 March 2026 at the National Biodiversity Centre, Serbithang.

The sessions covered key topics including an introduction to biodiversity and its importance, global perspectives on biodiversity conservation, and discussions on biopiracy and the evolution of international agreements such as the Convention on Biological Diversity and the Nagoya Protocol. Participants also explored Bhutan’s approach to addressing biopiracy through bioprospecting and Access and Benefit Sharing mechanisms.

In the afternoon, participants were introduced to Bhutan’s agrobiodiversity and visited various biodiversity conservation programs and facilities at the National Biodiversity Centre. The day concluded with a visit to the Biodiversity Interpretation Centre and Orchidarium at the Royal Botanical Garden Serbithang, providing participants with a closer look at Bhutan’s plant diversity and conservation initiatives.

The two-day program aims to strengthen awareness and encourage the tourism sector to actively contribute to biodiversity documentation.
